Discovery Wheel

The Discovery Wheel pairs with eight themed wood medallions to create added play opportunities throughout the playground. The Wheel itself is mounted on a Robinia post. The eight medallions are intended to be installed throughout the play space.

Children will spin the arrow to start their search for the themed medallions hidden around your place space. Medallions should be thoughtfully located in customized locations at the discretion of the client. Each site is unique and medallion placement is based on the desired play experience.

The spinning arrow is double-ended, creating a possible challenge for two children to race to each find the creatures identified by either end of the arrow.

Play Value

The medallions are engraved, so they will have a tactile experience and would make a great rubbing with some paper and crayons. The critters on the medallions are a wonderful conversation starter, opening opportunities for social and imaginative play.

Merits

The Discovery Wheel theme is focused on North American critters: butterfly, turtle, snake, snail, chipmunk, bird, beetle, bee. Together, it fits with other available Collections pieces that reflect the flora and fauna of the natural world like the Leaf Climber and Junior Critters.

While the Discover Wheel may immediately prompt ideas about seek-and-find physical play, it also opens the door for children to use their imaginations. Can children find real examples of these species? What sounds do they make? Conversations may begin about habitat, favourite sightings or similarities and differences.

Materials

The Discovery Wheel and medallions are made of Accoya. The Wheel is attached to a Robinia post.

Accessibility

The Discovery Wheel can be an accessible ground-level play feature when situated on an accessible path or surfacing. Medallions could be accessible depending on where they are placed.
